Lead in baby products

Recalled baby food, toys & jewelry with elevated lead — and what to check

There is no known safe level of lead for babies and young children — and it has turned up in recalled baby food, cinnamon, toys, and children's jewelry. After the 2023–2024 lead-contaminated cinnamon applesauce recalls that sickened hundreds of children, many parents now check before they feed or buy. TinySafe tracks 29 baby and kids products recalled for elevated lead, including baby food pouches, spices like cinnamon, toys, and metal jewelry. Lead exposure in early childhood can affect brain development. Check the products below against official recalls, and confirm with the FDA or CPSC. A product not listed here is not confirmed lead-free.

Leadtop reason
What official guidance says
From the U.S. FDA and Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
No safe level of lead for children
Health authorities agree there is no known safe level of lead exposure for children. Even low levels can affect brain development, learning, and behavior, and effects can be irreversible.
Lead in baby food and spices (Closer to Zero)
Under the FDA’s Closer to Zero initiative, the agency is working to lower lead and other heavy metals in foods for young children. Cinnamon, applesauce pouches, and root-vegetable purees have been recalled for elevated lead.
Lead in toys and children's jewelry
The CPSC limits lead in children’s products. Painted toys, metal jewelry, and imported items are common sources — keep these away from young children who may mouth them, and check recalls before buying.

Common questions

Is there lead in baby food?
Some baby food pouches, purees, and spices such as cinnamon have been recalled for elevated lead, including the widely reported 2023–2024 cinnamon applesauce recalls. The FDA’s Closer to Zero initiative aims to reduce heavy metals in foods for young children. Check specific products against official recalls.
Was the cinnamon applesauce recall about lead?
Yes. Certain cinnamon-containing applesauce pouches were recalled after testing found very high lead levels, and many children were affected. Related cinnamon and applesauce products appear in lead recalls listed on this page.
Which baby products have been recalled for lead?
TinySafe tracks baby and kids products recalled for elevated lead, including baby food and pouches, spices, toys, and children’s jewelry. The full list grouped by product type, with official FDA and CPSC sources, is on this page.
What about lead and heavy metals in baby formula or bottles?
Independent testing (such as Consumer Reports) has reported trace heavy metals in some formulas, and a few baby bottles have been recalled for lead in exterior paint or print. Trace amounts in food are common because metals occur naturally in soil; a recall is different — it means a specific product exceeded a limit. TinySafe lists products formally recalled for lead; for general formula concerns, the FDA's Closer to Zero pages and your pediatrician are the right sources. We report recalls, not test scores, and we don't rate a formula as 'best' or 'cleanest.'
Why is lead dangerous for babies and toddlers?
There is no known safe level of lead for children. Exposure in early childhood can affect brain development, learning, and behavior, and the effects can be permanent, which is why lead recalls are treated urgently. If you're concerned about exposure, talk to your pediatrician.
How do I check if a product was recalled for lead?
Find the product on this page or in the TinySafe recall index. Each entry links to the official FDA or CPSC recall record so you can confirm the affected lots or models before you feed or buy.
