Baby registry safety: what to skip and what to check before you buy

Most registry checklists tell you what to buy. Almost none tell you what to skip for safety or what to check for recalls first. We won't tell you what to buy — we have no review data and don't rank products. What we can show you is which products have been recalled, so "has this been recalled?" is one honest thing you can check before you add it to your registry.
Skip these — banned or not recommended
These come up on registry lists but carry safety risks experts warn against.
- Crib bumpers — banned from US sale since 2022 (Safe Sleep for Babies Act). Keep the crib bare. See why
- Infant pillows & sleep positioners — not safe for babies under 12 months; raise suffocation and SIDS risk.
- Baby walkers — the AAP advises against them due to fall, burn, and drowning risks; banned in Canada since 2004.
- Inclined sleepers — linked to infant deaths and restricted under the Safe Sleep for Babies Act. A baby should sleep flat on their back.

Recalled for hinge entrapment, brake failure, and small parts that detach. Check the model before buying, new or used.
Nursing & support pillows
Not for sleep or unsupervised use. A baby can roll into the padding and suffocate.

Always check before buying — especially used
For any big item — car seat, crib, bassinet, high chair — check the brand and model against the official CPSC and FDA recall databases first. Avoid used car seats entirely: you can't verify crash history or expiration. For other used gear, confirm it isn't recalled and meets the current safety standard. Recalled products resurface constantly on resale sites and marketplaces.

No — and any source that confidently ranks 'the best' baby products is usually guessing or selling something. TinySafe has no review data and doesn't recommend or rank products. What we can do is show you, objectively, which products in each registry category have been recalled and why, so 'has this been recalled?' is one honest factor you can check before you add something.
Which baby registry categories have the most recalls?
Feeding (bottles and formula), toys and teethers, bath and skincare, and safe-sleep products account for the most recalls in our data. Sleep products are the highest-risk category because some recalls follow infant deaths. Each category above links to the specific recalled products.
Are unbranded or 'alphabet-soup' Amazon baby products safe to add?
Products from unfamiliar random-letter brands and third-party sellers don't always meet U.S. safety standards, and many have been recalled — a common worry parents raise about gifted or low-cost registry items. If you can't identify a real brand or find safety information, check it against official recalls before using it, especially for anything that goes in a baby's mouth or that they sleep in. Is it safe to buy or accept secondhand baby gear?
Often yes, but check the exact model first — recalled cribs, bassinets, loungers, swings, and car seats are frequently resold by people who don't know they were recalled. Never use a recalled sleep product. Look up the model on this site or at cpsc.gov before using a hand-me-down.
How do I actually check a specific product before adding it?
