Why no crib bumper is safe
Padded bumpers are banned, not just recalled
Under the Safe Sleep for Babies Act, padded crib bumpers can no longer be legally sold in the US. Infants lack the strength to turn their heads away from soft surfaces, so a bumper can block their airway. "Breathable," "mesh," and "braided" bumpers are still risky and not recommended — the AAP advises a completely bare crib: a firm, flat mattress with only a fitted sheet. If your crib has a bumper, remove it.

Popular doesn't mean safe
Some online listings and "best crib bedding" sets still include padded or braided bumpers, despite the federal ban. A bumper being sold, stylish, or part of a matching nursery set does not make it legal or safe. Skip any bumper and keep the crib bare.
Why so many get recalled
Many recalled bumpers are sold by third-party online sellers who continue listing banned products, often as "braided" or decorative bedding. When one listing is removed, a similar one reappears under a new brand. That's why a bare crib — not a "safer" bumper — is the only safe choice.
